Ooredoo Qatar, in collaboration with Hamad Bin Khalifa University (HBKU) and the Ministry of Defence, has established Qatar’s first quantum-safe communications link, which the company described as a first-of-its-kind achievement in the region and a milestone in advancing next-generation cybersecurity.

The project uses Quantum Key Distribution (QKD), which generates and distributes encryption keys using quantum mechanics and can detect attempts to intercept communications.

Deployed within Ooredoo Qatar’s operational network, it builds on research led by HBKU in collaboration with ID Quantique (IDQ) to develop a QKD testbed compatible with existing telecommunications infrastructure.

Implemented using Ooredoo’s dark fiber infrastructure, the project successfully validated secure key generation and distribution across multiple fiber-link distances.

Ooredoo said the initiative demonstrates the practical deployment of quantum-safe technologies in a live telecom environment.

HBKU’s Qatar Center for Quantum Computing led the scientific development and system integration, while the Ministry of Defence supported the project as a strategic stakeholder. The partners said the collaboration strengthens Qatar’s quantum capabilities, digital resilience and secure communications infrastructure.
